Hello, I'm Claire!
I grew up in Grand Haven, Michigan in a family of 5 where we spent most of our time traveling, camping, taking hikes, relaxing on the beach, and eating ice cream. I still enjoy many of these same hobbies today!
After high school, I attended Michigan State University where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. My focus was in Language Arts, while I also minored in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages.
As I transitioned over to the working world, I landed a job at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish School in East Lansing- Go Tartans! I have been teaching 3rd grade there for 4 years. I have continued to grow as an educator, and am lucky to have a supportive staff that I can enjoy my passion of teaching with!
Why literacy? Reading and writing is the foundation for success in every subject. I love knowing that I get to play such a large role in all of my student's education. I also love that when reading and writing, you can go anywhere in time. You can travel to somewhere you've never been, or you can go go away to a distant, made up land. Dreaming with my students is one of my favorite parts of my job, and literacy is one of the best ways to do that.
Teaching was always apart of my life, as my mom was an elementary teacher. From as young as I can remember, I was helping her set up her classroom, and grading papers. I knew I wanted to follow in her steps.
After graduation, I spent one year back in Grand Haven as an intern in a 2nd grade classroom. I had 24 amazing students, and a fabulous mentor teacher who helped mold me into the teacher I am today!
After a year of teaching, I decided to continue my education back at MSU. This brings me to my current status as a graduate student in the Masters of Arts in Education program. Here, I am studying Literacy Education in hopes of setting a strong foundation for 3rd graders, and instilling a love for reading in them.
